As part of our participation agenda Family Action is committed to giving the families we work with the chance to speak out on the issues which concern them. Media participation projects aim to give people a voice with which to challenge public perceptions and media stereotypes.
In 2008 a Wellbeing group run by Family Action in Swaffham, in partnership with West Norfolk Carers, Social Services and The Iceni Partnership, worked with a researcher and filmmaker as part of the Joseph Rowntree Foundation’s project ‘Poverty in the media: Being seen and getting heard’. Through a series of workshops they planned and recorded a series of interviews in which they spoke about the realities of living on benefits, often with disabilities, in a rural location. The final film, ‘Telling your own story’ is now available to watch on the Joseph Rowntree Foundation’s website.
