Hannah's Story

Hannah is just 14-years-old. She cares for her mother, who suffers with rheumatoid arthritis.

Due to her mother’s disability, Hannah does most of the household duties, including collecting the shopping, and doing all of the cooking.  Hannah was referred to the Family Action Young Carers services when she became very stressed with fulfilling the role of her mother’s carer. At such a young age, she was emotionally drained, she had low confidence and school had become a real struggle.

When our Young Carers Family Support project learnt about Hannah and her mum, we provided them with practical support, such as taking Hannah’s mum shopping on fortnightly basis, to relieve Hannah of this duty.

We also helped with an application for disability benefits, which was successful. Along with this, we applied for a discounted taxi card, which means that Hannah no longer needs to do the weekly food shop, as her mum can manage it on her own by getting a taxi.

Our Family Support also referred Hannah’s mum to the occupational therapist; the outcome means that aids in the home have been provided for support with the stairs, bathroom and in the kitchen. As a consequence, Hannah no longer has to do the cooking, as her mum has the aids she requires.

Hannah now has a mentor at the Young Carers service, and she takes part in the Saturday club, which includes outings and trips. This gives Hannah the opportunity she needs to have time for herself and enjoy her childhood. By mixing with her peers, Hannah can also share experiences with other young carers.

To support the work that Family Action does, working with young carers facing adult responsibilities, please make a donation today, and help us work with more children like Hannah.
