Volunteer as a Befriender

Family Action's Perinatal Support Projects provide community-based early intervention for women with or at risk of developing post-natal depression, and for their babies.

Volunteer befrienders undertake home visits and help run support groups focussing on relationship building and general parenting skills.

Becoming a perinatal befriender is an opportunity to use your own life skills or your experience of perinatal depression to provide important social, emotional and parenting support for new mothers.

Read what some of our befrienders have said about the Perinatal project...

As well as helping to lessen the effects of mental health problems and social isolation on a mother, her new child and any other family members, you will also have the opportunity to learn new skills, improve your own sense of well-being and make a lasting contribution to your local community.

""Through volunteering I have become more confident...it has also made me aware of some skills I never thought I had."

To assist you in this role and as part of your own personal development, Family Action will ensure that you are trained to offer support to mothers both before and after the birth of their child.

Each project is managed by a co-ordinator who is responsible for ensuring that you work safely and professionally.

If you are interested in becoming a volunteer befriender, please contact the Project Co-ordinator at your local Perinatal Support Project.
