Applying for a Welfare Grant: What You Need To Know

How do I apply for a Welfare Grant?Funds available for use as Family Action Welfare Grants are restricted due to a lower return on our investments. As a result we are limiting the periods when we are open to welfare grant applications.

During 2009/10 we will accept welfare grant applications between the following dates:

  • 1-31 December 2009
  • 1-31 March 2010
  • 1-30 June 2010
  • 1-30 September 2010

Unfortunately we are unable to accept welfare grant applications outside these dates; no exceptions can be made. Welfare grant applications received outside these dates will be returned to referral agencies. We will continue to accept women's holiday and educational grant applications at any time.

Applications must be made by someone who knows the applicant in a professional capacity such as a social worker, health visitor or tenancy support worker. We cannot consider applications made by the individual seeking the grant.

We cannot consider letters as applications. Applications must be made using the appropriate grant application form. Application forms are revised from time to time so please download the latest version from the website; applications made on out of date versions of the application form cannot be considered.

Applications require various supporting documents; some requirements vary depending on which priority area the applicant meets. Details of the supporting documents required for applications for each of the priority groups are explained in the guidance at the beginning of the application form.

Incomplete applications and applications without all the requested supporting documents cannot be considered and will be returned.

We cannot make grants to applicants who have received a Family Action Welfare Grant or a Greater London Women's Holiday Grant within the previous 12 months.

What cannot be funded?

Funds are not available for:

  • council tax arrears
  • debts (except utility bills)
  • fines
  • rent deposits
  • funeral expenses (including associated expenses, such as headstones)
  • gifts (such as toys for birthdays, Christmas or other festivals)
  • items already covered by statutory funding
  • rent arrears
  • rent payments
  • repayment of Social Fund or other loans
  • bankruptcy
  • items already purchased

How are funding decisions made?

On receipt of all the information requested, the application will be considered at the next available meeting of Family Action's Grants Panel.  Read more about Family Action's Grants Panel.

Based on the application form and supporting documentation, the Grants Panel will decide whether to approve a grant and the size of the grant.

When will I hear about the progress of my application?Family Action’s grants service is run by a small team processing a large number of applications each week. We are unable to acknowledge the receipt of applications. We will write to the professional worker with the results of the application. Due to the very high volume of applications that we are receiving it is likely to take 4-6 weeks for applications to go to a panel meeting. We regret that we are unable to give information about the Grants Panel’s decisions by telephone.

Where a grant is made the cheque will be made payable to the referring agency or service/utilities provider. Under no circumstances will cheques be made payable to individuals.
