The Royal College of Psychiatrists has produced a film aimed at young carers, watch the film here to find out more about living with a parent with mental health problems (you will be taken to the Royal College of Psychiatrists' website).
In the film, young carers from one of Family Action’s services talk about their lives and the effects of caring for a parent with a mental health problem. Narrated by Chineye, a young carer, the film also explains in a very simple and visual way how the brain is believed to work and the neurological process of what happens when things go wrong. This is described as ‘a failure of the filter in the brain which allows only necessary information to pass through, resulting in the brain becoming flooded with information. The result is the individual is left feeling overwhelmed with emotions.’
This film, which depicts medication as a ‘sticking plaster’ rather than a cure, offers valuable insight to children and young people seeking to gain a simple and basic understanding of mental health from a biochemical perspective.
They have also produced an information leaflet on Mental Health in Pregnancy - find out more about this leaflet.
