Family Action has been fighting poverty and promoting financial inclusion in England since our foundation in 1869. We were instrumental in securing the first state pension and setting up the Citizens Advice Bureau; today we're official supporters of the
Robin Hood Tax campaign. We provide access to grants as well as practical financial advice to the thousands of families we support.
Grants
Our Welfare Grants assist families across the UK living on low incomes. Typical grants are usually between £100 and £300 and benefit the whole family, for example by replacing a broken washing machine. Being able to meet these unforeseen costs can help prevent a family getting into spiralling debt. Read one couple’s story here.

Grants of £100-£300 pounds are available through our educational grants programme for students on low incomes at institutions affiliated to EGAS. Horizons education grants are also available for lone parents looking to improve their employment prospects – read one parent’s story here.

Services
It is through our frontline services that we see first-hand the effects that poverty has on the families we support. Poverty contributes to and exacerbates other issues, such as mental and physical health problems, domestic violence, social isolation and limited opportunities for learning. Working with families when and where they need help, our approach is holistic and flexible; as we help families grow in confidence and build stronger relationships we also give practical help on improving their financial situations. Campaigning
We have been actively campaigning on behalf of disadvantaged families since 1869. Our campaigning work is directly informed by our frontline experience and through our grants programme. As well ae are founding members of the End Child Poverty campaign and work alongside other organisations to campaign on issues that affect the families we work with, especially fighting poverty and promoting financial inclusion. You can read more about our policy and campaigning work here and download our reports on the poverty premium and the financial impact of domestic violence.

Family Action is proud to be a supporter of the Robin Hood Tax campaign. Lots of organisations and individuals are backing this campaign for a 0.05% tax on speculative banking transactions that could raise hundreds of billions to fight poverty here and abroad, and prevent cuts to services. We hope that public pressure can make this campaign successful – add your support to the tens of thousands of people who have already pledged theirs by visiting the
campaign website.
