Liya, who has two boys aged 8 and 10, tragically lost her sister and nephew in the Grenfell Tower fire. Liya was struggling to cope in the aftermath of the tragedy and so was referred to Family Action’s Grenfell WellCommunity Service for both emotional and practical support.
Whilst Liya benefited from one-to-one support sessions, the boys enjoyed playing and chatting with another Support Worker. It was really important that Liya had some time away from her boys as the topics broached in sessions could leave her visibly upset. Meanwhile, the relaxed environment gave the boys a safe space to talk about their experiences, concerns and hopes for the future. They particularly benefited from the emotional support around the time of the fire’s anniversary. Family Action also bought t-shirts for the family to wear for the anniversary march.
We felt the family could do with an escape from the everyday and so organised some trips for them to go on together. For one of the boy’s birthdays Family Action paid for them to go to Chessington World of Adventures. We also arranged for a stadium tour at QPR Footbal Club as the boys absolutely love football (this was a common topic of conversation with their Support Worker!).
