Family Action’s Parent Carers Service is open to all parent carers in Newham.

A parent carer is someone aged over 18 who provides care to a child with a special educational need or disability (SEND) for whom they have parental responsibility.

Identifying needs

On behalf of Newham Local Authority we carry out what’s known as a parent carer assessment. This is used to assess the needs of a parent carer who has a child with SEND aged under 18 who is not eligible for statutory social care services. The assessment looks at the support that a parent carer gives, and the impact on them that is over and above what would be expected for a parent carer of a child at that age.

This assessment involves a home visit, looking at the needs of the whole family. Find out more about a Parent Carer Assessment and who is likely to be eligible.

Providing support

Once the assessment has been completed and the needs and level of support identified, we will put in place a care plan together with the family. The care plan commonly consists of signposting to universal services and the Newham Local Offer. We will also link in with statutory services (Newham’s 0–25 SEND Team) if a parent carer’s needs are more complex.

Referrals

We can only accept referrals to the Parent Carers Service via Newham’s MASH Portal.
