Disability Living Allowance (DLA)

DLA is often the first benefit which parents claim – it’s not means tested and is paid every month. There are two elements to DLA, care and mobility, so consider whether you will need to apply for which element or both, for instance.

For more information on DLA, visit Citizens Advice.

Direct payments

Direct Payments for disabled children were introduced in 2000 and are becoming more popular among families. They aim to give you and your child more flexibility and control about the support services you need, for example, money can be given for you to pay for a personal assistant for your child, for a childcare place, for an activity club for children with SEND.

Other benefits

There are a wide range of other benefits you can claim for, such as:

  • Carers Allowance
  • Child Tax Credit
  • Parental Leave
  • Other grants – eg fares to hospital

Ask your SENDIAS team who to contact and about eligibility criteria.
