‘I’m on my way to recovery and I would be in a lot of trouble if I hadn’t had these sessions. I felt listened to like I mattered”

15 year old service user

Family Action provides emotional and therapeutic services to children and young people aged five to 17 years old and their families, building on our whole family ethos.

We take a child/young person-centred approach and assess the full range of needs that child/young person brings to the therapeutic process.

Our support package is tailor made to each individual which maximises outcomes for the child/young person. We also work closely and in partnership with other agencies including Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) to provide services to children and young people who do not meet the CAHMS threshold.

Our services

Family Action’s therapeutic services include:

  • Recovery work with children/young people who have experienced abuse, trauma and/or loss
  • Young persons counselling, addressing the needs of young people who are outside of education or at risk of exclusion
  • Emotional health and wellbeing work addressing issues such as problems at school, bullying, isolation, poor self esteem, family crisis/breakdown, marginalisation, poor attachment, unhealthy coping strategies
  • Group work
  • Support for families whose children are accessing our services

Work may take place at our centres, at school or in the community.

In addition, some of our services are able to offer training and consultancy designed to give professionals better understanding of the impact of mental health issues, trauma and loss upon the children and young people with whom they work.

For us it [the training ] has provided us with expert advice, which in turn has given us an insight into the needs and difficulties of some of our most vulnerable children and families…”

All our services are supervised and delivered by trained professionals and we also work with volunteers in their final year of counselling training and counsellors working towards British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP) accreditation. Our staff all receive regular supervision.

We use a variety of approaches based on the needs of the child/young person and the aims and outcomes of the project. These include:

  • Cognitive-based work
  • Solution focused approaches
  • ‘Protective Behaviours’ work
  • Bodywork which includes teaching and practising relaxation and mindfulness techniques to help children develop awareness and control over their own physiological and muscular  stress responses
  • Educative work which can normalise the child’s response to abuse, trauma and loss and help them to develop coping and management strategies for symptoms
  • Systemic work
  • Non Directive therapeutic work which can involve the child working at depth in an unconscious process and involves the use of play and art therapy resources and techniques

Our impact

We use a range of evidence based tools to measure our impact, including SDQ, YP CORE and CORS,  MY Star, and the Teen Star and regularly report outcomes and impact to our commissioners.
