Kenneth’s story: my volunteering and employment journey with HeadStart

15 July 2020

Kenneth, a young person supported through our HeadStart service shares his volunteering and employment journey. Kenneth started volunteering at the London Bowling Club for 16 hours helping with the maintenance and restoration of the club. Following completion of this placement, Kenneth secured a role at the Berkley Street Starbucks store.

I joined HeadStart because being able to have a guaranteed interview with Starbucks for volunteering in my local community was too much of a win win to turn down. I have also gained valuable transferable skills such as effective communication for my future professional and social life.

“I have grown as a person since completing HeadStart. It has given me a massive confidence boost”

Starbucks is a very fast-paced busy environment to work at times but my managers, supervisors and colleagues have been really supportive and patient welcoming me into their family which is what it feels like working for Starbucks!

Overall, I feel that being part of such a great company is very rewarding and I feel that I am able to be the best part of a customer’s day in terms of providing a worldclass customer service.

I have grown as a person since completing HeadStart. It has given me a massive confidence boost.
