Jacob was 13 when Family Action started working with him. He was caring for his father who had a degenerative disease. He had just a few years to live. Jacob was also supporting his mum who was disabled and had depression.
Jacob did a lot of the chores around the home and provided a lot of emotional support for both his mum and dad. He was finding it really hard.
Jacob was assigned a Family Support Worker, Nazia. Nazia was able to offer emotional support, helping Jacob to talk about his father’s condition – something he was finding hard. Nazia also provided pre-bereavement support to ensure he could prepare for his impending loss. As well as this, we invited Jacob to weekly activity sessions, enabling him to meet some other young people who also cared for a member of their family. This helped him to know he wasn’t alone.
When Jacob’s father passed away, Nazia continued to see Jacob regularly. She also provided a lot of support to Jacob’s mum, ensuring she had all of the information and support she needed to make positive decisions about the next stage of their life.
Family Action’s Young Carers project helped Jacob to cope with a very difficult time in his life, helping him work through it and come out the other end as a young man with a bright future.
We help thousands of families, just like Jacob’s, every year. So much of what we do is only possible due to the support of people like you. We’d love for you to get involved and be a part of our family. Take a look at the following ways that you can support our work…
