Family Action to Deliver the National School Breakfast Programme for an Additional Year

24 November 2022

Family Action is set to be the delivery partner for the National School Breakfast Programme (NSBP) for an additional year, due to an additional investment of up to £12m by the government. The funding ensures that hundreds of thousands of children, across England, will continue to be provided with a healthy and nutritious breakfast at the start of the school day.

The current version of the NSBP launched in 2021 and is funded by the Department for Education. Since the launch, and working with delivery partner Family Action, the programme currently has 2,170 schools participating and limited places remain available. Now, thanks to the additional investment, schools can benefit up until July 2024, helping to make sure children continue to receive a healthy breakfast, to set them up for the school day ahead.

Family Action’s Chief Executive, David Holmes CBE, said: “We are delighted to announce that due to the National School Breakfast Programme extension, we will be able to continue supporting hundreds of thousands of children in disadvantaged areas until July 2024.

“Family Action is committed to supporting child development, and we know that a healthy school breakfast, without barrier or stigma, can set up children to succeed and give them the very best chance to learn.”

Children & Families Minister Claire Coutinho said: “The National School Breakfast programme is fantastic, providing schools with over one million nutritious breakfasts to children every week. A healthy breakfast gives children a boost to their concentration and wellbeing and helps parents with the cost of the weekly shop.”

David Holmes CBE concludes: “I urge any eligible school to sign up to the National School Breakfast Programme while places remain available.  A healthy breakfast can make the world of difference to a child at the beginning of the school day. “
